"Dare to Dream"
The Wish" came from 3 different sources of
inspiration. It was 1993, and I was in England, on the
southern coast, walking on the beaches where Romans had landed, and
visiting old castles. This put me in a very Medieval frame of
mind, and in my hotel, I worked out some music with a melody that had a
Medieval feel to it, in 3/4 time. No words yet. (I
usually write music before the words).
A few days later. a tour of London reminded me that
hunger and poverty know no borders and exists in all parts of the world.
While waiting in the airport to return to the US,
I was looking forward to getting back home to see my children and wondering what
stories I should tell them, as they always wanted me to spin tales for them.
I recalled a story I had read to them before leaving for Europe, about a boy who
had a coin that granted three wishes. Sitting the in the terminal, I
started writing some words, and by the time the plane landed, the whole story
was told. I recorded the song quickly to get it released on "Songs For
Kids With Common Scents", which was almost completed.
In 2000, I was honored to have the song picked up
by the Artists Hunger Network to be included in a compilation CD of songs about
issues of hunger and poverty, called "The Time is Now", along with tracks by
Pete Seeger and other great singer-songwriters.
The song reached #1 on the folk charts at NumberOne

We have since added the song to our performing repertoire,
to great response from our audiences. The distinctive guitar line
remains one of my favorite to play. ( Lyrics
