Most Likely to Succeed
(The Yearbook)
words and music by Bill Pere
Now it's seven past midnight on this back street, West L.A.
Seems like the end of the road, got my yearbook today
What is there for an encore, when it seems you've just done it all?
Only one way to go, and it's a long way to fall
Report card is showing four aces, but I just don't get any rush
It's the kids who are loved who have the real royal flush
Page 103, the picture's me,
A kid who's never had a lover or a friend
They say I'm bright, they may be right
But it doesn't seem to matter in the end
When you've been the best, all that's left is less
Don't be fooled by that caption you read
Under the photograph, it's an epitaph
That I'm the one who'll most likely succeed
I hoped my father would love me,
That his hand would be there to hold
But since Mom went away his eyes are icy blue cold
No, he never listened, when I'd talk about how bad I felt
He said he'd make it feel right with the end of his belt...
All of my life I've tried hard to please,
Just look at the awards that I've won
But Dad could never muster a smile for this dutiful son....
So I never show a tear, never show an emotion,
Never show the cards that I hold
People say that I've been dealt a good hand,
But I think I'm ready to fold
Now I look through the window of this all night grocery store
People leading their lives, I'm asking what is it for?
In school I'm just a shadow, at home it's like I'm not really there
The only reason to live is if there's someone to care
Is there something more that lies beyond sleeping?
With a few extra pills — I'll find out
So I walk into the store, cause now it's time to check out Page 103, the picture's me,

They say I'm bright, they may be right
But it doesn't seem to matter in the end
When you've been the best, all that's left is less
Don't be fooled by that caption you read
Under the photograph, it's an epitaph
That I'm the one who'll most likely succeed
